Background

As a result of urban development and residential growth around Adelaide, upgrades were required to the Western Adelaide Wastewater Network.

The existing trunk sewer main along West Tce was over capacity, leading to a surcharge of the network and odours. The project’s objective was to reduce wastewater flow and odour in the water main and provide additional flexibility in the wastewater network to cater to future needs.

This project showcased new approaches to working with live oviform mains, isolating and bypassing pump-deep, high-flowing mains without impacting the catching network and commuters on highly trafficked roads.

Environmental outcomes

This project achieved outstanding environmental results, significantly reducing impacts on the River Torrens and its ecosystem, preventing potential overflows, and preserving vital trees in the parklands. Essential sewer upgrades were completed with minimal disruption to commuters and the environment.
