Upgrades to the Tolderol Game Reserve, a 200-hectare constructed wetland near Lake Alexandrina, are now complete. This project, a key component of the Healthy Coorong, Healthy Basin (HCHB) Program funded in partnership with the Australian Government, has delivered substantial infrastructure improvements to enhance environmental resilience, improve floodplain management, and optimise wetland flows within this nationally important Ramsar site.
Our scope of works included upgrading approximately 3,800 meters of existing supply channels and significant earthworks for the creation of new banks, channels, and access tracks. The project also involved the installation of new pipework and basin supply points, featuring headwalls, 28 sluice gates, and scour protection. To improve accessibility, new access tracks were surfaced with granular pavement materials. A new conveyor and screen system was designed and constructed for the efficient removal and stockpiling of waterway vegetation. These improvements have expanded the available wetland habitat by an additional 61 hectares and extended crucial inundation periods.
The successful completion of the project involved careful construction within sensitive waterways, with a deep understanding of the ecological and cultural significance of the Coorong freshwater, estuarine, and marine wetland habitats. This collaborative effort benefited from the crucial involvement of stakeholders including the Murraylands and Riverland Landscape Board, the Ngarrindjeri Aboriginal Corporation, and National Parks and Wildlife Service SA, ensuring a holistic approach to the enhancement of this vital ecological asset.
