Background

The City of Onkaparinga’s Water Proofing the South strategy ensures sustainable water use by replacing traditional sources with alternative water sources such as stormwater. This initiative reduces flood risk, enhances water quality, and supports environmental sustainability.

Stage 1: Christie Creek Upgrade ($15m)
The $15 million Christie Creek Upgrade involved the construction of a stormwater management system that harvests 850 ML/year. The project successfully mitigated flood risks and contributed to sustainable water management by accelerating water quality improvements.

Stage 2: Managed Aquifer Recovery (MAR) and Wetlands ($23m)
Building on Stage 1, Stage 2 expanded the system to harvest 2.8 GL/year through Managed Aquifer Recovery schemes, wetlands, and pipelines. The innovative design allows for independent pump station operation and remote management, ensuring high water quality and efficiency.

Outcomes

The project is financially self-sustaining and has delivered significant benefits, including flood mitigation, enhanced local amenities, improved biodiversity, and economic development through alternative water sourcing. High levels of community satisfaction highlight the project’s success.
