Background
At the time of completion, the iconic South Road Superway was South Australia’s largest and most complex road infrastructure project. It is a key component in the redevelopment of Adelaide’s critical North-South transport corridor to meet future needs. The project was jointly funded by the state and federal governments.
Leed delivered the project in a Joint Venture with John Holland and McMahon Contractors.
Scope
This high-profile project delivered a 4.8 km non-stop corridor incorporating a 2.8 km elevated roadway—the first of its kind in South Australia—10 m above the existing South Road and supported by 68 concrete piers. Grade separations were also undertaken over four signalised intersections and a freight railway crossing.
Leed’s role included groundworks, construction of concrete structures, pavements, drainage, traffic management, and service relocations. Innovative construction methods, such as pre-stressed, segmented concrete girders and continuous flight auger piles, ensured a 150-year design life despite challenging ground conditions.
With traffic management and innovative designs, the project maintained full traffic flow during peak hours without any traffic incidents. The South Road Superway dramatically reduced congestion, enhancing connectivity between key industrial hubs and Adelaide’s ports while supporting long-term growth for the State.
