Background
Upgrades to Ravine Road South involved transforming a section of 5m access track into a two-lane, 7-meter-wide asphalt road capable of handling large, heavy loads, including 11-meter-wide Tunnel Boring Machine components for the Snowy 2.0 project.
This 16km section through the highest elevation sections of the Lobs Hole Access Road included major earthworks, pavement construction, and drainage works through steep and challenging terrain. Works were required to be delivered whilst maintaining construction access to ensure no disruptions were caused to Australia’s largest committed renewable energy project. This approach allowed us to deliver a durable, safe and secure road despite the complex terrain in Alpine conditions.
Outcomes
The Ravine Road South works for Snowy 2.0, which involved stabilising five ‘Boulder Stream’ slip areas. These areas feature 30-100m wide boulder slopes in constant motion over a geological time scale.
Leed stabilised these five unique sites using a combination of excavation, soil nails, tecco mesh, mega flow drains, and concreting techniques, with each site tailored to the specific requirements of the engineers.
The project was successfully delivered in late 2020, navigating the challenges posed by post-bushfire conditions and the COVID-19 pandemic, all within the Kosciuszko National Park.
