Background

Porters Creek Dam is located 60 km south of Nowra in southern NSW. It was originally constructed in 1967 with a post-tensioned concrete spillway and reinforced concrete stilling basin. There was concern about the structural integrity of the anchors, which could corrode and lead to failure.

The ANCOLD concrete dam, standing approximately 17 meters high and 240 meters long, features earthen abutments on both sides and a reservoir capacity of around 1,900 ML. Concern over the structural integrity of the existing anchors led to Leed being engaged to enhance the dam’s security by constructing a downstream concrete buttress and installing a new foundation and drainage anchors.

Additionally, Leed was responsible for upgrading the surrounding infrastructure, including the widening, reconstruction, and sealing of 14 km of road around the dam.
