Background

Lake Mannus, a popular recreational spot, faced a significant challenge when a large flood caused the dam to overtop, leading to its failure and the loss of a large portion of the embankment.

Leed was engaged to reconstruct the dam, which included drilling and blasting, bulk earthworks, and rebuilding the main embankment with a higher crest level. Additional works involved constructing primary and auxiliary spillways, installing reinforced concrete training walls, hydraulic control structures, inlet/outlet MSCL pipework, and electrical and telemetry works.

Outcomes

The project, delivered on time, under budget, and with an exemplary safety record, increased the dam’s capacity to 2350 ML. Despite the need for a redesign due to unexpected site conditions, the carefully planned program protected the site from floods.

This successful restoration of Mannus Lake has reinstated its recreational appeal and increased the water storage capacity for Tumbarumba.
