The heart of a great company is its people

18 February 2026

It’s the people that build a great company and culture. That’s certainly the view of Loukas Skoumbros, who recently celebrated 20 years with Leed.

He says the ‘incredible people’, the fact that everyone is respected across all levels, and the company’s increasing skills and capabilities are key reasons why people stay long-term with Leed. Loukas (centre) is pictured with Leed’s Managing Director Craig Laslett (left) and General Manager Operations Paul Teakle (right).

Loukas started out as a graduate back in 2006. He initially worked on civil projects in Roxby Downs when Leed’s staff head count was just 95 people.

Over two decades with the company, he has continued to climb the career ladder as the company has grown. Fast forward to now and Leed has expanded from its Adelaide operations to offices in Bendigo, Cooma and Melbourne, with more than 350 staff across its offices and project sites.

Thinking back to the start, Loukas says his future was sealed following a lunch with the company’s original directors.

‘After hearing that Leed self-perform and are a hands-on ground type business I knew immediately that this was for me. Leed remain a similar type of business and here I am 20 yrs later,’ he says.

‘The skills, quality and project delivery get better and better. Leed have a high rate of retaining staff and employ incredible people who you can learn so much from. I have been fortunate to work closely with many of them.

‘From the beginning, Leed felt like a family, and nothing has changed. Working at Leed you are not just a number, you are respected and treated like family.’

Loukas says he was supported to move up through the company ranks—from engineering right up to his current role in the estimating team.

‘Opportunities are endless at Leed. Starting as an undergraduate, I moved my way through many roles from graduate to site engineer, project engineer, project manager, and over the past five years have now been able to carry all my site experience into my now role in estimating.’

These days, Senior Estimator Loukas spends his time estimating for potential future projects across three states.

There have been so many projects across 20 years and Loukas can’t pick his most memorable but returns to the idea that it’s the people who make the workplace.

‘I have been lucky enough to work on a variety of projects across Australia and it is difficult to pin-point one moment but what I can say is having a strong driven team around you makes every project special’.
