Background

Both Port and Woodville Roads in Adelaide’s western suburbs were prone to flooding in heavy rains. In a 1-in-100-year rainfall event, these major roads experienced knee-deep water, making them unusable and impacting access to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, almost 4,000 homes, and several local businesses.

The Port Road Drainage Upgrade mitigated this flood risk by replacing the existing trunk mains in the Port Road central median with two parallel trunk mains between Old Port Road in Cheltenham and Park Street South in Woodville.

Approach and outcomes

  • Upgraded infrastructure: The existing trunk mains were replaced with two larger, parallel pipes, buried deeper to accommodate increased stormwater flow.
  • Water reuse: An irrigation pipeline was installed to utilise recycled water, supporting sustainable landscaping in the area.
  • Minimal disruption: Careful planning and staging of works, including weekend and night operations, helped to minimise the impact on road users, residents, and businesses.
