We have been awarded a project in the stunning Werai forest, which will support the health of the forest’s waterways and wetlands through improved connectivity and fish passage.
The Werai Forest Regulators Project involves replacing three ageing water regulators and constructing a new regulator.
Aside from the environmental benefits, the project will also provide better access and opportunities for First Nations people as owners of the forest, and allow better and more efficient water delivery.
Located northwest of Deniliquin in New South Wales, Werai Forest spans more than 11,000 hectares and is recognised as an internationally significant Ramsar-listed wetland. The forest is the traditional lands of the Wemba Wemba and Barapa Barapa people.
The Australian Government funded project is being delivered by the NSW Government in close consultation with the Werai Land and Water Aboriginal Corporation.
Beyond the infrastructure, the project supports Traditional Owners’ aspirations for Werai to become a cultural knowledge precinct for the mid-Murray region.
This latest project win builds on our growing portfolio of environmental works across the Murray–Darling Basin, including projects in Millewa Forest, and at Yanco and Katarapko.
