Overview
Leed delivered the design and construction of a new 36.2 megalitre post-tensioned concrete clear water storage tank and associated infrastructure for Goulburn Valley Water in Shepparton.
The project increased potable water storage capacity to meet future demand and improve the resilience of the network through to 2050.
Scope
Leed completed the:
- design and construction of a 36.2 megalitre post-tensioned concrete storage tank, approximately 74 metres in diameter and 10 metres high
- installation of roofing and access infrastructure
- construction of inlet, outlet, overflow and scour pipework, including approximately 200 metres each of OD559 and OD914 pipeline
- installation of cathodic pipe protection
- electrical works and lighting
- construction of access and ring roads.
Notably, the project recorded Leed’s largest ever single concrete pour to date—900 m3 of concrete placed continuously overnight from 127 concrete truck deliveries.
Challenges and innovation
Leed adapted its construction methodology to suit the constrained site and environmental considerations. A revised benching method for connecting the new pipeline to the existing network improved construction efficiency while allowing several trees originally identified for removal to be retained.
Other project innovations included:
- extensive ground improvement works undertaken beneath the tank footprint to create a stable foundation for the structure.
- tank wall panels were precast on site, enabling larger panels to be constructed while reducing stitch joints and the amount of post-tensioning required. Precasting also saved on transport costs.
- an innovative formwork system was introduced for rebate casting, improving efficiency and accelerating construction.
- All excavated material was retained and reused on site, reducing waste and truck movements.
Outcomes
The completed project delivered an additional 36.2 megalitres of potable water storage capacity for the Shepparton region to support water security into the future.
This project also supported the Shepparton community through valuable partnerships with key organisations. These included:
- creating a pathway into construction for a female site administrator through a partnership with specialist recruitment organisation SheForce
- providing meaningful employment opportunities for people with disability by partnering with Vivid.
