Planning the key for perfect panel installation

22 April 2026

When every lift is equal to lifting three double-decker buses, the planning has to carry just as much weight.

Our Leed team and project partners recently installed 48 pre-cast concrete panels around the circumference of the new Shepparton Clear Water Storage Tank. Each of those panels were 10 metres high and weighed 37 tonnes. Our team worked with precision and perfect timing, installing the full set over 2 ½ days, including placing 23 panels on day one alone.

While our experts made it look easy, it’s all down to the months of detailed planning behind the scenes.

Way before a crane arrived on site, the team prepared lift studies, lift designs, and other detailed plans. During installation, each numbered panel needed to be installed in order in still conditions with little to no breeze—namely a wind speed below 28km/h.

These installation works were a win for sustainability—as the panels were pre-cast on site, removing transport costs. Pouring on site also meant that fewer, larger panels could be produced, which saved on installation time.

With the panels in place, tank construction was halfway through. The next steps were to stitch the panels together using hi-strength concrete, secured in timber formwork, followed by post-tensioning to eliminate gaps, and grouting to lock it all together.
