Upgrade doubles capacity of NSW sewage treatment plant

27 January 2026

The $20M upgrade of the Urunga Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) is complete, doubling the intake capacity of this facility on the NSW north coast.

The project, in partnership with the Bellingen Shire Council and NSW Public Works, means the STP has increased its intake capacity from 5000 people to the ability to cater for 10,000 people.

The upgrade will not only benefit the town of Urunga but surrounding coastal towns including Raleigh, Mylestom and Repton, which will be able to connect into the plant in the future.

Our works on this project included the creation of a new inlet works facility; an additional IDEA reactor, which improves processing; sludge lagoons; access roads, and a chemical storage plant.  This equated to:

  • 10,000 cubic metres of earthworks
  • 2000 cubic metres of FRP concrete
  • 3000 metres of pipework

These works are part of the Sewering Coastal Villages Scheme—a major infrastructure project aimed at providing a modern, sustainable sewerage service to NSW coastal communities.
