Background

The Snowy Hydro Scheme is Australia’s largest ever engineering project. The scheme diverts water from four of Australia’s major rivers over a mountainous area of over 5,000 km2 and now provides a capacity of more than 5.5 MW of electricity across New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia.

The Snowy 2.0 project is a significant expansion of the original scheme that is a core component of Australia’s transition to renewable energy. It will link the existing Tantangara and Talbingo dams through a 27 km underground tunnel, and through a new underground pumped-hydro power station will provide an additional 2,000 MW of capacity.

Leed has been working at Snowy 2.0, both directly with Snowy Hydo and for the Main Contractor Future Generation (We Build), since the project’s inception, delivering a range of earthworks, bridge, concrete, drainage, road and pavement works. The engagement is through a series of repeated and specific tasks. These are effectively a framework of services that has been continuous for 5 years.

Project success

  • Over 15 contracts totalling $400M have been successfully delivered.
  • Environmental management in sensitive National Park environment.
  • Ability to operate in remote location, harsh climate in steep and hazardous mountain conditions.
  • Adoption of equipment specific to the task. We have introduced Next Gen technology and zero swing excavator to allow safer excavation in difficult high batter circumstances. Sourced and engineered specific plant solutions to assist safe and efficient operations such as truck-mounted snow ploughs, rubber tyred excavators, trenchers to speed pipeline exaction, and formwork systems, and we are currently sourcing remote operated excavators for shaft excavation.
