Strathalbyn WWTP Upgrade Stage 1 Lagoon Civil Works
A new lagoon to expand water storage capacity and reduce mains water consumption

Background

The township of Strathalbyn south-east of Adelaide is serviced by a Community Wastewater Management System (CWMS). Wastewater is collected through a network of gravity drains and pumped to the Wastewater Treatment Plant. Treated water is stored in a 120 ML polyethylene-lined storage lagoon and used for irrigation.

The Alexandrina Council has assessed that this lagoon does not have adequate capacity to meet the needs of the CWMS and has engaged Leed to construct a new 110 ML lagoon to provide additional balancing storage and related works to improve the operation of the plant.

Scope

Leed has been awarded the contract to construct, test and commission a new 110 ML HDPE-lined earth bank storage lagoon with associated infrastructure. The works include:

  • Bulk earthworks (50,000 m3)
  • 5 mm HDPE liner (29,000 m2)
  • On site pipework, valves and chambers
  • Leak detection system
  • Roadworks (3,300 m2)
  • Crossovers
  • Emergency egress ladders, overflow spillway and floating suction intake pipeline
  • Security fencing and gates.

Outcomes

This job is currently proceeding on time and budget, with an excellent safety record. It is scheduled for completion in February 2019.
