Quipolly Dam Safety Upgrade
Major safety upgrade to a 1950s dam

Background

Quipolly Dam is an earthen storage with a capacity of 5,400 ML which supplies water to the town of Werris Creek in northern New South Wales.

The dam required a major safety upgrade having received a High Hazard Rating as described under the Dams Safety Act.

Scope

  • 7 m-high reinforced concrete cutoff wall along the dam crest
  • 5 m earthen embankment raising including rip-rap protection along the upstream face
  • A new 10 m-high reinforced concrete training wall
  • Spillway upgrade involving temporary coffer dam, underfloor drainage, ground anchors, reinforced concrete apron slab and the installation of fuse gates
  • Demolition of existing footbridge
  • Upgrades to the intake tower and access bridge
  • Instrumentation
  • Construction of a sealed crest access road

Outcomes

Leed and Liverpool Plains Shire Council worked together in a highly collaborative partnership, leading to successful outcomes for all parties. Leed were subsequently awarded another water infrastructure project by council.

Liverpool Plains Shire Council won an Asset and Financial Management Award for the project as part of the 2013 National Awards for Local Government.
