In October 2006, the Premier, the Honourable Steve Bracks, announced a new pipeline to connect Ballarat to the Goulburn. The "Goldfields Superpipe" will provide water security for 50 years to the major regional centres of Ballarat and Bendigo.
At present Ballarat is facing severe water restrictions, as a result of prolonged drought with storages in the Ballarat region at an all time low. In addition to this, the Greater Ballarat region is forecast to increase its population from its present 96,000 to 124,000 by 2030 and further increases to 149,000 by 2055.
On the November 1, 2006, customers in the Ballarat area moved into Stage 4 water restrictions, which include a ban for all outside watering.
The Superpipe will provide up to 10,000 ML/yr of additional water to Ballarat initially with the potential to increase to 18,000 megalitres per year in the future.
The Goldfields Superpipe will draw water from the Waranga West Channel, which is supplied by the Goulburn River system. Water will be transferred from the Waranga Channel to the Ballarat and District Water Supply System.
Construction is likely to commence in July 2007 with completion in February 2008.
