Christmas Cove Redevelopment
Client: Kangaroo Island Council
Location: Penneshaw, Kangaroo Island, SA
Year: 2003
The Christmas Cove Marina Redevelopment project is the first stage in the redevelopment of Penneshaw’s marina.
The marina is the home to some of Kangaroo Island’s most significant wildlife including the “Little Penguin” colony and archaeological heritage such as glaciated rock surfaces, glacial clay deposits and “Flinders Rocks”. The area is protected by the Heritage Act 1993 and therefore construction methodologies and plans were to take into account the requirements of the permit issued by the Minister for the Environment and Heritage as well as EPA requirements for dredging works.
Prior to works commencing the penguin population had to be relocated and significant areas protected from construction works. The scope of work included formation of a clay bund at the Cove entrance, removal of the water within the Cove and excavation to level of silts and clay to both an on site fill area and off site stockpile. Revetment walling was constructed using on site clays and imported armour rock.
Dilapidated boat ramps and timber mooring structures were demolished, a new concrete boat ramp installed, steel piles were placed to provide support to the new boat launching pontoons and mooring facility. The Cove was then re-filled with water and the clay bund removed.
